Over 120 students from CityDance’s after-school DREAM program will perform in CityDance’s fourth All-School Annual Performance, entitled The City is Ours on Friday, May 25 at 7:00 pm at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H Street, NE). This is free and open to the public.
CityDance’s DREAM program works with students from third to eighth grade year-round in programs that teach dance, empowerment, service and civic engagement. The program focuses on children in underserved communities in Wards 1, 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8.
Students choreograph their own dances using the techniques they learned in class, while also drawing inspiration from their community goal. This year’s performance will feature a variety of student-selected community issues from anti-bullying to combatting violence toward women.
At the event, students will also showcase their advocacy and community efforts through a “Service Fair,” which includes creative poster-board displays of their service projects in the Atlas’ lobby.
Students performing on Friday come from Brightwood Education Campus, CW Harris Elementary, JO Wilson Elementary, KIPP: Will Academy, Oyster-Adams Bilingual School, Thomson Elementary and Turner@Green Elementary.
See the video below of JO Wilson’s performance from last year inspired by a service project with the elderly. The students created a dance that blended old techniques and music the older residents liked with new music the students enjoyed.
